Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Department of Cancer Biology are pleased to announce the training program to promote diversity in cancer research for undergraduate students, a summer research program for underrepresented minority students.

Disparities in cancer incidence and mortality rates among different ethnic/racial groups has been well recognized; however, research in this area has lagged behind, partly due to a shortage of cancer researchers and physicians from underrepresented minorities.

Program Goal
Our goal is to place emphasis on those students coming from institutions where they might not be exposed to biomedical research during the academic year.

Program Objective
The objective of this training program is to promote and enhance the diversity of the future cancer research workforce by providing undergraduates from underrepresented populations with opportunities for short-term research experiences.

We are recruiting highly qualified underrepresented minority undergraduates, in North Carolina and nationwide, and will provide participants with hands-on research activities in basic and translational laboratories, exposing them to cutting-edge cancer research. We also will provide mentorship and guidance to participants for their career development and will guide students in future career development.

The training program consists of seven critical components:

Orientation Ambassador Program
Lecture Series Seminars and Journal Club
Career Guidance Mini-symposium/presentation
Faculty-mentored lab work experiences
