Laura J. Veach, PhD, LCAS, LCMHC, Professor of Trauma Surgery, Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine has many extracurricular passions that fuel her work, but it’s her time as an archeology graduate student, digging through layers of history during an excavation at Dr. Vierling’s house in Old Salem, that ignited her desire to get to the root of a problem. Veach’s research interests include substance-related disorders, off-road motor vehicles, trauma centers and accident prevention, and her model for hospital bedside interventions has been presented around the world. The ability to take research and directly implement key learnings into an academic learning health system’s clinical setting, as well as make a positive impact with people in her community, are some of the reasons she has stayed at Wake Forest Baptist.

Faculty in Focus offers a glimpse into the people behind the medicine. What motivates our faculty? How do they live a balanced life? What drives their passion to pursue new discoveries? The answers are as individual as the person. Veach’s story shares how one person can make a difference in society. Stay tuned for the next video in the series.
