Sabina Gesell is a professor and vice chair of social sciences and health policy at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. She holds a doctoral degree. Gesell focuses on recovery after stroke, hypertension management, epilepsy care and pediatric primary care coordination.

Her research interests include improving patient experience of care, including access, care coordination, communication with clinicians, culturally appropriate care, self-management support and telehealth. She designs clinical trials, health system interventions and social network interventions. She incorporates the ideas of patients, caregivers and policy makers in her research.

Gesell is the director of the Center for Advancing Racial Equity (CARE) and was formerly the director of the leadership development programs for Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS). Additionally, she is affiliated with the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity and the Department of Implementation Science.

Gesell received a bachelor’s degree in education at Vassar College. She received a master’s degree and doctorate at the University of Notre Dame.
