Robert Charles Goodrich, MD  Robert “Bobby” Goodrich (PGY5)

I am originally from Nashville, TN and attended medical school at UT. I have 2 children. I chose Wake Forest because of the family-friendly atmosphere, the affordability of the surrounding area, and the climate and culture of North Carolina.

The best thing about being a resident here is the personal and professional support we get from our collogues and mentors. I plan to work in academic medicine as a pediatric neurologist with a special focus on neuroophthalmology. I am interested in education and hope to develop learning models for future neurologists and pediatric residents.

I'm from Western Kentucky and I'm living here with my fiancé and my dogs. I love being outdoors, especially having anything to do with boats! I also love being outdoors and traveling. One of the things I've loved taking on as a pass-time here in Winston is doing house projects. I've noticed that I've started developing an addiction to HGTV. I chose Wake because I felt like it was a family. Almost immediately on my interview day, I knew I was going to fit in well when was able to talk about sailing on the local lakes with one of the child neurology attendings. In other interviews, I laughed like we had been friends for life. In addition, I knew I wanted to live in Winston-Salem. It's such a wonderful place to live and it was enough to make Wake Forest a coveted place to train. I feel that I'm prepared to handle things on my own, even now, but I never feel abandoned. I think the programs do a great job of putting residents into positions to take ownership of patient care, while having the perfect amount of oversight as well.

It's the PERFECT size! It has a booming downtown with amazing things to do and it feels like it's expanding everyday! The affordability and variety of choices of places to live is second to none, especially with the opportunity to train at an institution with the reputation of Wake Forest. Most importantly, I'm honestly in love with the lack of traffic in this city! I rarely ever see slow downs on the highways, and even though I never have to travel very much, it's nice to known I can get anywhere within the city in 15 minutes. I also love it's close proximity to bigger metro areas like Greensboro and Charlotte. Both places are close enough that an evening trip can be easily done to experience the things these places have to offer, like professional sports. I love venturing to all of the local breweries with my friends in the area. They have wonderful selections and always have fun things going on like game nights, trivia, concerts, and support the incredible Winston-Salem art scene.

Wake Forest has been incredibly supportive of my career goals. I have developed relationships with many leaders in their field. My research has focused on medical education, cranial ultrasound, and pediatric stroke. I am planning on applying to a pediatric intensive care fellowship and pursuing a career in pediatric neurocritical care.
