Medical Physics Curriculum Overview

All core courses are required for the graduate certificate, and for the MS and PhD degrees.

For the PhD degree

A minimum of 6 credit hours of elective coursework is required. Courses not on the list below may be approved as electives by the program’s curriculum chair.

In addition to the completion of core coursework and electives, MS and PhD students will be expected to complete hands-on clinical training in the form of clinical rotations. Clinical rotations, requiring completion of a minimum of 12 credit hours, are a requirement for graduation.

This component of your training will include:

• Assisting with equipment and patient-specific quality assurance practices
• Commissioning of new technology in the clinic
• Observation of standard and special treatment procedures

This structured experience will advance your technical abilities and knowledge-base, positioning you for rapid advancement after starting your career. All clinical activities will be supervised and guided by program faculty.

While only required for the PhD degree, potential medical physics research areas include, but are not limited to:

• Applications of multi-modality oncology imaging in radiation treatment
• Physical and biophysical modeling
• Radiation treatment optimization
• Small-field dose calculations
• Monte Carlo modelling of clinical radiation modalities
• Scatter analysis of cone-beam CT for image guided radiation treatment
• Biological effects of low-dose CT imaging
• Small animal radiation studies
• Biophysical aspects of radiation countermeasures.

Flexibility is allowed for experimental and theoretical dissertation topics based on your interest and funding designations, decided in discussion your research mentor and dissertation committee.
