Department of Urology Research

Our faculty members are active researchers whose goal is to identify the new treatments of tomorrow for urologic conditions and diseases. They’re at the forefront of discovery in urology, conducting basic science and clinical research in the areas of incontinence, prostate cancer and regenerative medicine. Our innovative research program means our patients have access to new treatments and technology before they are widely available.

Our research includes:

Incontinence Research
Researchers in the Department of Urology have joined forces with colleagues from the Institute for Regenerative Medicine to uncover genetic aspects of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and to develop an animal model to test potential treatments. Their goal is to develop evidence-based approaches to the prevention and treatment of SUI, a condition that affects more than 5 million Americans.

Prostate Cancer Research
Wake Forest Baptist Health’s genetic susceptibility research includes work based on the identification of the first prostate cancer susceptibility gene, HPC1. In the area of novel therapies, research includes the use of genetically engineered vesicular stomatitis virus to kill prostate cancer cells as well as therapies exploiting the roles of calcium and parathyroid hormone.

Regenerative Medicine
This team is working to engineer replacement tissues and organs and develop cell therapies for more than 30 different areas of the body. It was first in the world to successfully engineer bladders in the lab that were implanted in patients.
