Wake Forest Medical Scholars Summer Program
The Wake Forest Medical Scholars Summer Experience offers content designed to recruit, educate, and prepare underrepresented minorities and disadvantaged high school students for careers in medicine. The program period is June 19 - 23, 2023, and will be held in person at the Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education. Specifically, the program's aim is to identify underrepresented 11th and 12th grade high school students who have an interest in a medical career and academic potential for a career in the medical field. The program provides our participants a unique opportunity to explore various career opportunities within the medical and health care fields which could ultimately lead them to future careers in the medical profession.
Activities include 20 to 25 hours of presentations, tours, hands-on simulation experiences and exposure to state-of-the-art health technology equipment used in various medical professions.
During the program, the student will be able to:
- Learn about the various career opportunities within the medical specialties and sub-specialties.
- Learn responsibilities, health career exploration, and educational preparation of select health professions.
- Engage in hands-on simulations with state-of-the-art health technology equipment used in the medical field.
- Solidify their decision to enter a medical career field.
- Experience a learning environment which integrates school life with the adult world of work.
- Meet and interact with medical professionals and current medical students who share their medical career goals.
Applicants must meet all requirements:
- Be enrolled in the 2023 - 2024 school year.
- Complete the application process and meet the summer program guidelines.
- Have a minimum 2.5 grade point average.
- Submit a letter of interest outlining your career goals and why you want to participate in our summer program.
- Submit the photo release form, liability waiver, and safety measures document.
- Complete the pre-survey and post-survey.

Wake Forest Health Care Explorers Summer Program
The Wake Forest Healthcare Explorers Summer Experience offers hands-on activities and educational experiences designed to recruit, educate, and prepare underrepresented minorities and disadvantaged high school students for careers in the health profession. The program period is from June 26 - 30, 2023, and will be held in person at the Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education. Specifically, the program's aim is to identify underrepresented 9th and 10th grade high school students who have an interest in the healthcare field and academic potential for a career in the health sciences.
Activities include 20 to 25 hours of presentations, tours, simulation experiences, and exposure to state-of-the-art health technology equipment used in various medical professions.
During the program, the student will be able to:
- Learn about the various career opportunities within the health sciences.
- Learn responsibilities, health career exploration, and educational preparation of select health professions.
- Observe clinical simulations using state-of-the-art health technology equipment used in various health professions.
- Solidify their decision to enter a health career field.
- Experience a learning environment which integrates school life with the adult world of work.
- Interact with health care practitioners and health professionals who share their health career goals.

In close consultation with local health experts, we continue to monitor public health conditions locally and around the world. To remain consistent with North Carolina revised guidelines, the following policies are effective immediately.
Participants in our summer programs are encouraged to have COVID-19 vaccinations, such as the 1st and 2nd dose of Pfizer or Moderna, or single dose of Johnson & Johnson, plus a booster. Participants may also be required to wear masks in medical center facilities.
