Continuing Education Courses for Nurse Anesthesia

The Continuing Education Courses at Wake Forest School of Medicine supports the learning needs of practicing certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and those seeking re-entry to practice.  CRNAs who are looking for specific education content can also contact the program to establish an individual learning plan. For additional information please contact us with your inquiry at napinfo@wakehealth.edu

CRNA Course: Complete Review in Nurse Anesthesia

The CRNA Course offers 100 Class A CEs through a combination of both classroom lecture and simulation activities. This course is designed to update participants’ skills and knowledge of current theoretical practice in anesthesia to meet current standards of nurse anesthesia practice and to help CRNAs qualify for reinstatement of lapsed certifications.

Upcoming Refresher Course Dates: December 3-15, 2018

NBCRNA-Recognized Simulation Center

The nurse anesthesia program provides the simulation-based skills assessment required for Step 2 of the re-entry program of the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA). Simulation testing may be scheduled once applicants accumulate 100CEs and successfully complete the National Certification Exam (NCE) once they enroll in the NBCRNA Reentry Program.

Simulation-based NBCRNA Skills Validation

After completing the required 100 hours of continuing education and successfully passing the national certification examination, re-entry program candidates may schedule a visit to a NBCRNA-recognized simulation site to have their clinical skills validated in simulated testing scenarios. This experience is a required portion of the reentry process, and is a great confidence-builder for CRNAs who have been out of practice.

Our NBCRNA-approved re-entry process includes:

  • A supportive environment for completing NBCRNA Step 2 simulation testing requirements
  • Introduction to simulation
  • Use of anesthesia machines
  • Five carefully-crafted scenarios that allow you to demonstrate the skills required for re-entry to certification

Continued Learning Opportunities

CRNAs who would like to review or learn new skills outside of certification requirements can work with faculty members to create individual learning plans to hone skills that include:

  • Central line insertion
  • Spinal and epidural insertion
  • Ultrasound guidance for regional anesthesia
