Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to know about being in a focus group?

Focus groups have around 7-10 people who have some things in common and can answer questions together in a group. The focus groups will last approximately 90 minutes. One or two adults at the focus group will ask some questions and will keep everyone talking. Another adult will take notes to write down things participants say. When we start, we will ask if we can record the group so that we can listen to it again if needed. We will not share the recording with anyone who is not on the study team.

  • Additionally, all participants will be reminded that information shared during the focus group should not be shared with anyone outside of the focus groups. Participants will be asked to verbally agree to not share information with others outside of the focus group.

What will I do in a focus group?

If you join our focus group, you will be asked to take part in a group discussion. We want to hear your ideas and thoughts about e-cigarettes, vaping devices, and other pod-style tobacco products. The discussion will only happen one time, after school, in a private, convenient location on your school’s campus.

What are the costs of being in the focus group?

None. Being in the study is free. The only cost to you is the time spent and resources that you may need to get home after the focus group, like bus fare.

Will I get any money or gifts for being in this research study?

You will get a $40 gift card at the end of the focus group session.

Can I be in more than one focus group?

Do I have to be an e-cigarette user or vaper to participate?

No. We need a variety of people to participate, including those who do and those who don’t use e-cigarettes or other vaping devices.

Will my information be shared with my school, other people, or my parents?

No. We will not share your personal information with anyone outside of our research team. Things you say during the focus group will not be connected with your name. Parents will have to say it is okay for their child to be in the focus group, but we will not share personal information about any students with their parents. In addition, we will not share your personal information with anyone at the school or with the school system.  However, if there is any information shared during the study that indicates that a student may harm themselves, harm someone else, or may be in danger, the research team will follow procedures provided by the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System and will notify the appropriate school personnel. The school staff member will follow-up with the student and parents.

How will information gathered in the focus groups be used?

The focus groups will help us learn about teens’ perceptions of and experiences with e-cigarettes and other vaping devices, like JUUL. This information may help us do things like develop health messages about the products and inform prevention curriculum. We hope that the information we learn from the focus groups will benefit others.

How can I learn more about this study?

If you want to participate, the next step is to complete the screener for the teen vape study . You must provide contact information for your parent/guardian so that we can contact them and get permission for you to participate.
